Adopting from Haiti:
Post-Earthquake |
Thank you
for your interest in adoption from Haiti. We are so very
saddened by this recent tragedy that has hit Haiti and the
desperate faces of all of the children seen in media coverage.
We
greatly appreciate Americans who want to respond by offering to
open their homes and adopt these children in their hour of
need.
As in any disaster of this
magnitude, the children who may have been orphaned because of
the earthquake would not become available for international
adoption for at least 1-2 years to allow time to be reunited
with their displaced family members. This
is a first priority!
International
adoption is a process involving background checks,
investigations into the orphan-status of a child, and much
paperwork. The timeframe for an
international adoption from Haiti, even when Haiti’s
infrastructure was stable, involved a waiting time of at least 2
years or more. With the urgent need of food, water, medical
care, and safety on-going for the people in Haiti, that wait
time will most likely become longer in the aftermath of this
tragedy.
Even if children from Haiti who have no waiting
families are brought to the United States, families with a
current homestudy (approval to adopt) will be given the
opportunity to adopt or foster these children.
Families wanting to foster or adopt a Haitian orphan should be
prepared to incur expenses of approximately $4,000 or more in
homestudy fees and/or other related pre-adoption expenses.

For additional
information, we encourage you to read:
|
If you are still interested in
pursuing an adoption from Haiti when adoptions resume, we would
ask that you:
-
Review
Haiti’s adoptive
family requirements to see whether your family
meets Haiti’s adoption criteria
-
Complete the
online
screening form (below) if you meet Haiti's guidelines for
adoptive parents
The
screening form will allow us to maintain
a waiting list
of interested families
for Haiti should an opportunity to adopt children designated
as orphans prior to the earthquake emerges. You will be
contacted later as we learn more about this possibility and the
process for adopting a Haitian orphan.
PLEASE
NOTE that the
current adoption guidelines for Haiti are quite strict.
There may be the possibility in the light of this tragedy that
some of Haiti's adoption guidelines may be relaxed, but we have
no guarantee that this may happen or when it might happen in the
future. Please remember that
there are many orphaned children around the world who are in
desperate need of a permanent home and loving parents. We
encourage you to also visit our other
country programs
and their adoption guidelines as you prayerfully consider taking
that first step to becoming the parent of an internationally
adopted child.
