Pre-Teen
Adoptees Connect Through New Group |
|
Children in the pre-teenage years are beginning
to understand more about their adoption and experience even more
questions at school. These children have not reached the
angst of their teenage years, but they are starting the process
of sorting out for themselves their own identity just as they
begin to understand more about biology. At a younger age,
they were just beginning to identify the differences between
themselves and their peers in terms of race, but they are
continuing to encounter questions, teasing, and possibly even
bullying from their peers.
In an effort to help adopted children face these
experiences, Dillon International has started offering a new
program series specifically for pre-teen adoptees, ages 8 to 12.
The group is facilitated by licensed social workers experienced
in international adoption and is designed to reach out to all
adoptees from all countries. The six-week sessions have
been held in Tulsa, OK, at Dillon's main office location, but
there are plans to host similar groups in the Spring of 2009 at
Dillon's regional office locations (AR, MO, TX, KS, and CA).
The goals of the group are to support
internationally adopted children on an age-appropriate basis as
they begin to explore adoption issues, enhance self-confidence
and self-identity while building a support system of peers for
internationally adopted children. The children have an
opportunity to share with their peers on topics including
Participants will have an
opportunity to chat wit holder adoptees and learn from
their experiences on these topics as well as hear
firsthand from a birth mother about her decision to make
an adoption plan for her child. Plenty of food,
fellowship, and fun are also incorporated into the
sessions.
If you or your child have
questions, please email
Jan Dunn or
Julie Kline.
So that no child will be prevented from
participating due to their family's financial need,
there are a few scholarships available. Please ask
for a scholarship application when contacting the
agency. |
